Get There Early

In Get There Early, Bob Johansen’s goal is to provide a guidebook for a future that is not optional and cannot be avoided. He calls this future VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Most of today’s leaders were trained to solve problems, but they have trouble recognizing dilemmas. Dilemmas are problems that cannot be solved and will not go away. In this new world, leaders need practical ways to make sense out of complexity when problem solving is not enough. He defines strategic leadership as “what happens in the space between judging too soon and deciding too late.” In order to get there early, leaders need to sense the future, understand threats and opportunities, and decide when and what to choose.
