12: The Elements of Great Managing

Engaged, talented employees are a company’s greatest resource. Yet many mangers fail, through both neglect and ignorance, to bring out the best in their workforce. To determine the crucial components of great management, the Gallup Organization examined over one million employee and manager interviews. In 1999, Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman‘s book First, Break All the Rules divulged and explored 12 of the critical elements gleaned from Gallup’s research. Ten years later, Rodd Wagner and James K. Harter revisit those 12 elements in 12: The Elements of Great Managing, in which they incorporate the original Gallup findings with current research from 10 million employee and manager interviews spanning a variety of industries in 114 nations.
