Section One: The Mind-Set
1 - Becoming a Member of the Club
Author Keith Ferrazzi was born into a working class family. In fact, he was the son of a steelworker and a cleaning lady. Ferrazzi, however, did not allow these limitations to stop him from getting a scholarship at Yale and an MBA at Harvard.
As a young lad, Ferrazzi used to caddie at the local country club. There, he met the rich and powerful people who lived in a nearby town. It was there that Ferrazzi realized that wealthy people helped one another. Ferrazi learned that knowing the right people for the right reasons and utilizing the power of these relationships can get you to become a member of the “club.”
The best way to build and maintain meaningful relationships is to give more than you get. When you connect with people, make sure that you share your knowledge, resources, time, energy, friends, and associates. Always provide value to others and you will increase your own.
2 - Don't Keep Score
The secret to success is generosity. You must, however, be willing to accept generosity and sometimes, go out and ask for it. Remember that connecting is a continuous process of giving and receiving.
Stop keeping score. Remember that relationships get stronger with trust. You can't get people to trust you by asking what they can do for you. Instead, find out what you can do for them. Here are some insights that can help you understand this concept further:
- Remember that businesses and jobs can come and go. Friends and associates, however, can forever remain.
- It's always better to give than to receive.
- Think about this: the people who answer your phone today can very well be the people who have the choice whether or not to take your call tomorrow. Be nice to your subordinates.
- Always contribute to the people around you.
3 - What's Your Mission ?
Goal-setting is as important as it is touted to be. You must be able to know what your goals are and be able to establish relationships with people who can help you attain them.......
